The desire to freeze a moment in time has been expressed
by millions of people since the earliest of times: cave
paintings, sculpture, book writing, painting,
photography; as the centuries have passed the methods
have changed. Despite today's rapidly growing obsession
with technology, there are still writers and painters
who attempt to eternalize an instant through their work
in a more traditional medium. One such artist is Marie
Sophie Madre, a French painter who considers the
emotions beneath the outer layers of her subject and
strives to bring them to the surface...

When Ralph Petty developed the idea of the Combes
Gallery two years ago, his initial intention was
centered on showing the AUP community and beyond how
much talent there is to be found at this school. Every
month, artists from around the world are showcased, and
this time around AUP students themselves will have a
chance to show off their hard work. On December 2, the
students from Professor Petty's FirstBridge art class
will be introducing their work. The drawing class, taken
in conjunction with Professor Jim Clayson's "Visual
Computing" course, focuses less on drawing in itself
than on communication, perspective, and problem-solving
through images. Petty believes that it is essential for
any educated, well-rounded person to be able to express
and comprehend ideas in the form of images, not just
words...

The famed photo "The Kiss", taken by Robert Doisneau in
postwar Paris, has inspired many artists. It is
considered by many to be an example of a perfect
photograph; Robert Ogle, the photography professor at
AUP, has a different point of view. Ogle's quest to
replace the kind of classically revered beauty seen in
"The Kiss" with the more subtle foundations of form and
perspective resulted in his body of work, entitled The
Construction of Capital Space, to be showcased at the Combes Gallery at AUP on November 18...

You may have seen artwork hanging on the walls in the
entrance hall of the Combes building, and wondered where
it came from. You may have even noticed that the
exhibits change every few weeks. This is the Combes
Gallery, created just last year to promote an
appreciation of the arts at AUP. Whether you’ve got an
all-access pass to half the museums in Paris or you’ve
only been to the Louvre once, the Combes Gallery can
quench your thirst for art...
