The above courses, which are subject to expansion according to student and faculty interests, will be in the form of class lectures, seminars or a combination of the two, depending on the topic and the instructor. Classes will meet for two hours and thirty minutes per week over approximately 12 weeks per semester. The academic year is composed of two semesters.

 
 
 
 
 
 

1-year program

 
The one-year M.A. degree (MEIS) requires the successful completion of 32 credits:
 

Seven 4-credit courses (28 credits):

   
 

Six core courses (24 credits)

One elective course (4 credits)

 

 

A 10,000 word MA research project in the last semester of studies (4 credits).

2-year program

 
The two-year M.A. (MEISL) degree requires the successful completion of 64 credits:
 

Fourteen 4-credit courses (56 credits):

 

 
 

Six core courses (24 credits)

Four language courses (16 credits)

Four elective courses (16 credits)

 

 

A 20,000 word MA thesis in the last semester of their studies (8 credits).

 

 

An oral comprehensive examination on the core courses.

 

 
 
 

3-semester MEL program

 
The 3-semester MA degree (MEL) requires the successful completion of 42 credits:
 

Nine 4-credit courses (36 credits):

 

 
 

Four IS courses (16 credits)

Four Arabic language courses (16 credits)

One elective ME or IS course (4 credits)

 

 

A 10,000 word MA research project in the Spring semester of studies (4 credits).

 

 

A 4,000 word paper largely based on primary sources in Arabic in the Summer semester of studies (2 credits)

 

 
 
 

3-semester ISL program

 
The 3-semester MA degree (ISL) requires the successful completion of 42 credits:
 

Nine 4-credit courses (36 credits):

 

 
 

Four core ME courses (16 credits)

Four Arabic language courses (16 credits)

One elective ME or IS course (4 credits)

 

 

A 10,000 word MA research project in the Spring semester of studies (4 credits).

 

 

A 4,000 word paper largely based on primary sources in Arabic in the Summer semester of studies (2 credits)

 

 
 

 

 

All graduate students in this program are required to maintain a 3.00 GPA. Courses in which a student has earned a grade of C- or below must be repeated to obtain credit. No more than two grades of C will be accepted for this Master's degree.
