Working against the notion that "one size fits all," AUP's Writing Lab, as part of the Academic Resource Center (ARC), embraces individual differences and language confusions. What we do in the Writing Lab is as varied as the students who come in for appointments.

Our concerns go beyond working on one particular paper. Although we are happy to work with you on ideas, organization, argument, sentence structure, grammar, etc, in a particular writing assignment or project, we have in mind larger issues about argumentation, critical thinking and style. As a result, conferences are highly interactive. We will focus on problems in a short period of time and teach you skills which will serve you during your career at AUP. The more you work with us, the more confidence and independence you will gain in your college writing.

Come by our ARC offices to meet us and make an appointment. So that we can use our time efficiently, bring drafts of your work, note cards and class notes, the course syllabus or assignment, anything you have which can help us during our time together. But you don't have to be finished — or even started — with a paper to come for an appointment.

How to become a Writing Lab tutor

Would you like to challenge yourself (and earn money)?

Do you have excellent writing skills as demonstrated in your previous and current AUP classes?

Would you enjoy the experience of working with students one-to-one on their writing? - Are you curious about how writers make decisions, improve their skills, measure their progress and understand what they’re doing as they write?

Would you like to work in one of the most academically enriching spaces at AUP (ARC), with other students who are similarly driven to explore written language and its role in the lives of AUP students?

Each semester AUP’s Writing Lab offers qualified students the opportunity to earn money while assisting AUP students with their writing.  The number of these challenging and rewarding positions varies from semester to semester.

To apply, please contact Ann Mott, Director of the Writing Lab at mott@aup.edu or the Writing Lab office: 01.40.62.06.72 for an interview. Be prepared to supply samples of your writing at AUP along with the names of two professors who will provide references for you.

You do not have to be a CL major, a senior or a native English speaker to apply.

Tutors' reflections
on being a tutor

Working with the Writing Lab allows students this space to improve and excel in their writing in a way which a professor’s feedback never will.  Working for the Writing Lab not only requires these skills but also the ability to communicate them clearly and efficiently...

What you can expect

You set the agenda, and we help you achieve your short and long-term goals.

We will listen to your ideas for topics and ask questions to help you develop your focus, so that you can begin writing knowing what you want to accomplish in your paper. We will ask you to read part of your paper aloud so you can ‘hear’ your voice.

Expect that the tutor may identify important goals that you did not think of. Deciding what to work on in conference is a collaborative process.

What conferences are like

They are interactive: Your appointments in the lab are productive when you actively participate by asking questions and generating your own ideas for improving a piece of writing.

They are workshops: Work is done in individual, one-on-one collaborative sessions. If you come to the Writing Lab to work on sentence structure, expect to write some sentences. If you come to work on identifying a thesis for a paper, expect to generate some, discuss their pros and cons, and end up with a number of good candidates.
