Since English is the language of instruction at AUP, all candidates for
admission must demonstrate English proficiency at a level that will insure their
ability to complete successfully university-level work. Therefore, all
candidates whose mother tongue is not English must provide the results of the
computerized TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS, less than two years old. Students who encounter
difficulties in meeting this requirement must contact the Admissions Office for
instructions.
Candidates - with an otherwise
complete application - may satisfy this requirement by taking AUP’s English
pre-placement test, which is given only at AUP and can be scheduled to coincide
with a visit to the university.
The University will use the results of these tests to make a preliminary
English-level placement. Some candidates may be required to enroll in one or
more courses in the English Foundation Program; such study may require one or
more semesters to complete. These courses carry academic credit applicable to
the AUP degree; however, other universities may not accept these courses for
transfer credits.
Candidates may accept their preliminary placement or may choose to take the
Intensive English Placement Test offered during Orientation at the beginning of
each semester. Those students who do not submit results from the computerized
TOEFL or from AUP’s English pre-placement test must take this Intensive English
Placement Test. Final English level placement will be determined in consultation
with faculty in the Department of Comparative Literature and English.
Proficiency in French is not required for admission. However, before
graduation, all degree candidates must achieve or demonstrate proficiency in
French at a level equivalent to the completion of Intermediate French II.
