The general conditions to receive partial or full financial aid to cover accommodation, travel expenses and registration fees for the LACEA 2005 conference are the following:

 

1) Have a paper accepted for presentation at a contributed session

 

2) Come from a developing country

 

3) Confirm presence at the conference through a hotel reservation made before July 31

 

4) Prove there is no alternative source of funding

 

5) Eventually follow some additional prerequisites set by the organization or fund providing the scholarship (for example, that the person requesting the scholarship be a resident in a developing country as well as a citizen of that country)

 

Please note you can apply for a maximum of three scholarships.

Scholarship from the Central Bank of Colombia (BANREP)

 

The Central Bank of Colombia will provide three scholarships (complete or partial) to Colombian researchers both residents of Colombia and not affiliated to the bank.

 

The partial scholarships will consist of financial aid for accommodation (at hotels with agreements with LACEA organizers) and for the registration fee for the conference.

 

The complete scholarships are similar to the above but will cover the cost of flight tickets in economy class.

 

The selection of scholarship recipients will be made by a group of three anonymous economists from the bank.  In order to apply for this scholarship, please send an e-mail to Alvaro Riascos (coordinator representing the bank) at ariascvi@banrep.gov.co with the following information:

 

(1) The paper to be presented

(2) The message from LACEA accepting the paper for a contributed session

(3) A resume

(4) Please indicate whether the application is for a complete or a partial scholarship.

The Birmingham Prize

 

The Department of Economics of the University of Birmingham will give a prize to the best paper on "political institutions and economic outcomes". The prize consists of 1000 euros to be used for attending the conference and participating in the Birmingham Session on the topic.

 
 

"We are pleased to announce that the Birmingham Prize has gone to Claudio Ferraz (University of California at Berkeley) for his paper "Re-election Incentives and Political Corruption: Evidence from Brazil's Municipal Audit Reports" (joint with Frederico Finan, University of California at Berkeley) and Andrés Rodríguez-Clare (Inter-American Development Bank) for "A Political-Economy Theory of Trade Agreements" (joint with Giovanni Maggi (Princeton University). These papers will be presented in the Birmingham Session on "Political Regimes and Economic Outcomes".
