It is a custom at The American University of Paris to confer honorary degrees – most often a degree in humane letters honoris causa (Latin: 'for the sake of the honor') – on scholars or other prominent personalities, as a way of recognizing a distinguished person’s contributions to a specific field, or to society in general. Very often an honorary degree is offered to signal a recipient’s contributions in areas that align with the University’s mission and core values.

Honorary degrees have been awarded at the AUP Commencement Ceremony since 1984. One of the recipients is often invited to give a commencement address before the assembled faculty, graduates, and parents – an event which is often the highlight of the ceremony. The following renowned scholars, artists, writers, political figures, and researchers have received honorary degrees from AUP.
