The AUP advising program is designed to
follow closely each student's academic progress. Should a
student experience difficulties in a particular course the
advisor is notified where, in turn, the advisor contacts the
student to offer their assistance in finding a solution to
the problem.
The first year of university life can
be somewhat bewildering, especially for students who are not
familiar with the American system of higher education. For
this reason, Freshmen are assigned to the faculty member who
is teaching their FirstBridge course. This faculty member
will be the student's academic advisor during their first
year at AUP. We believe this creates a special link for the
students with other Freshmen and with faculty members
teaching Freshmen classes.
During the second year of study, or
before the student has declared a major, they are assigned
to an advisor in the Advising Center. The Center is open
Monday through Friday in order to help these students and
also to accommodate walk-in students who just have a quick
question or want to get some advice. By the end of the
Sophomore year most students have declared a major.
Once the student has declared a major,
they are assigned to a faculty member in that department who
will monitor their academic progress until graduation. These
departmental faculty advisors are best suited to offer the
student advice about courses in their major,
graduate study or career plans.
As you can see, AUP considers academic
advising very important at each step of the student's
university life. The advisors have only 20 to 25 advisees
which enables them to get to know the students personally
creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere. |
