Article by Acadia Webber in the February 2011 edition of The PlanetThe Languages Across the Disciplines laboratory is a university-wide structure hosting, supporting, and promoting language use, language teaching and learning, and language research across different languages and disciplines. Participants include faculty with many different disciplinary backgrounds and all members of the AUP community are welcome to join the laboratory.

The laboratory aims at promoting and guiding the implementation of language-related projects such as the development of innovative language teaching and learning experiences, the development/organization of outreach programs to cultural centers in Paris, support of informal language learning (e.g. international internships, study trips), the integration of software tools for language learning, and the definition of objective criteria for the evaluation of language courses.

The laboratory offers its members the possibility to play a key propositional role in the integrated development of the language curriculum across several languages and subject areas and facilitates faculty exchanges on these subjects.

Finally the Languages Across the Disciplines laboratory will encourage and support research activity in areas such as language teaching and learning, linguistics, literature and translation.

In its first year of activity the Languages Across the Disciplines laboratory has launched four important initiatives. Three of these initiatives are aimed at offering new forms of support for language learning to our students and one initiative assures AUP’s contribution to the Language Acquisition Network in Europe.

To find out about the new French Writing lab, the new possibilities for student volunteers to accompany members of the Institut National des Invalides to cultural events, the French/English conversation exchange, the Varieties of Initial Learners in Language Acquisition research project, the Endangered Languages student project, and the always popular English Writing Lab, please see:
