The American University of Paris has designed a very
successful intensive summer program in French language
and culture open to all qualified, adult visitors to
Paris. It carries academic credit but may also be taken
by auditors at a special reduced tuition. In the short
period of three weeks, participants are given maximum
opportunity to practice spoken French, improve their
pronunciation, review grammar and vocabulary, and get a
firsthand introduction to French culture with
experienced, native French teachers from the AUP
faculty.
|
| |
|
The Program: French
Immersion participants benefit from dynamic, innovative
methods of language teaching including audio and video
materials and real-life situations. Numerous cultural
outings (to museums, exhibits, theatre, cinema, etc.)
and creative assignments and projects encouraging
students to explore Paris, contribute to a complete
immersion experience in French life, language, and
culture.
|
| |
| |
|
Students may
wish to enroll in both sessions in order to take
full advantage of their stay. The break between
the sessions is a perfect opportunity to travel
or simply enjoy being in Paris.
Summer Term
students enrolled in standard courses may
participate in afternoon conversation classes
(FR 104i, FR 130i, or FR 211i). AUP matriculated
students should note that the French Immersion
program does not fulfill AUP General Education
requirements for French language. |

FR100i - BEGINNING |
|
Emphasizing the basic
linguistic structures and verb tenses, this course has been structured
for true beginners of French. Using visual stimuli (advertisements,
comics, photographs, etc.), students will learn to identify and describe
places, people and things as well as more abstract spatial, temporal
(hour, day, season), and emotional (feelings, thoughts and opinions)
ideas. Readings from short texts and everyday encounters (Métro, bank,
stores, markets and cafés, etc.) will further help students to quickly
become self-sufficient through basic language skills. |
|
4 credits | Mondays through Fridays |
FR104i |
| |
| |
|
FR200i -La Vie quotidienne |
|
This course seeks to expand
the students’ everyday vocabulary (fashion, transportation, housing,
cooking, health, etc.) through a variety of materials (songs, poems,
videos, advertising) so that they will feel at ease in their Parisian
environment. Through outings to cafés, museums, department stores,
students will be encouraged to explore the city’s colorful
neighborhoods. Role-playing and group discussions will help improve each
person’s oral expression, while written exercises will help one master
the grammatical and linguistic structures of French. |
|
4 credits | Level: low intermediate | Mondays through
Fridays |
FR130i |
| |
|
|
|
FR205i - La Société française d’aujourd’hui |
|

|
|
|
|
|

|
The Résidence Jérôme Lejeune St. Johns
Residence is a classic brick building located between AUP and
Montparnasse on a quiet square. During the school year it serves
as a foyer for nurses and young women students. In summer, the
residence also accommodates a limited number of outside groups.
All rooms are small singles which include
private showers and toilets. Sheets and towels are provided and
are changed weekly. Residents have use of the laundry room, two
T.V. lounges, piano, two study rooms and the outdoor terrace
until 1:30 a.m.
Meals are not included. There is a large
common kitchen and dining area where students can prepare their
own morning and evening meals while conversing with the other
residents. Each student is provided with cooking utensils and an
individual refrigerated locker. The building closes nightly at
1:30 a.m. and re-opens at 5:30 a.m.
Cost per student: TBA.

also free to find their own housing. The AUP Housing Office will provide
advice to those seeking an independent living situation. Summer students
cannot, however, be placed in chambres de bonne (converted maids'
rooms), studios or apartments, and the Housing Office does not play the
role of a real estate agent. |
