| I'd like to start the process of career
planning, but I'm unsure how to begin. What do you suggest? |
| |
| A good way to begin is by writing or
updating your resume. This allows you to think about the
experience you have had, and list your education and skills.
You can use this opportunity to assess what you enjoy (and
what you don't) and what your strengths and weaknesses are.
You can then keep this basic resume on file and tailor it to
more specific career opportunities later. You can also
request various self-assessment worksheets and tools from
the Internship/Career Development Office. You can do them on
your own time, then make an appointment to go over the
results. |
| |
| |
| I already have a resume, but how can I
update it? I'm not currently working; I'm a student! |
| |
| It may be appropriate to include
extracurricular activities, special academic projects,
volunteer activities or other interests. If you are unsure
as to what to include or how to include it, make an
appointment with the Internship/Career Development Office to
go over your resume in detail. Discussing your background
will help you identify key points you may have overlooked. |
| |
| |
| What if I've never written a resume
before? |
| |
| Request a copy of our Resume Writing Guide
and use it as a model. Then make an appointment with the
Internship/Career Development Office once you've written a
first draft. If you need to write a resume in French,
request our flyer called Le CV en français, and, similarly,
make an appointment to go over your rough draft. |

| |
| Will the Internship/Career Development
Office help me find a job? |
| |
| The Internship/Career Development Office
will assist you in exploring options and targeting and
contacting employers based on your interests and
aspirations. Two good places to search for a job are the
List of Employers Who Have Hired AUP Graduates and the
Current Job
Opportunities pages. |
| |
| |
| What if I think I'm interested in a
particular field... how do I get more information? |
| |
| Some resources are available in the Career
Development Office, such as books, directories, and other
publications. It's also advisable to search the Net to find
the most up to date information on current job offers,
professional associations, descriptions of specific
occupations and company websites. You can do this on your
own or at the Career Development Office. Finally, check with
us about AUP alumni currently working in your field who may
be available for informational interviewing. |
| |
| |
| How can I do an internship while
studying at AUP? |
| |
| Go to section on
AUP's Internship Program. |
| |
| |
| How do I tailor my resume to a specific
job offer or company? |
| |
|
This is a little tricky at first, but
it's one of the most important skills you can develop as a
job seeker. Tailoring a resume involves having a list of the
requirements or desired characteristics for a specific
position or employer and making sure that the information
you provide on your resume is relevant and appropriate to
these requirements. Your cover letter should include only
relevant information, as well. Again, make an appointment
with the Career Development Office to work on tailoring a
resume and cover letter to a specific job or internship
offer.
