Conditions

The internship program is reserved for AUP's degree-seeking students. Although exceptions are possible, students are normally expected to be in their junior or senior year and to be in good academic standing. Employers seek interns with a high level of personal maturity and any specific skills necessary for individual positions.

Summer students cannot pursue an internship with AUP.

Past internships cannot be credited by AUP, since retroactive registrations are not allowed.

A student who has already graduated cannot pursue an internship due to legal constraints. However, any senior or graduating MA student wishing to pursue the option of a non-credit internship when all degree requirements are completed must declare this intention by the deadline specified by the Registrar in order to defer his or her graduation by a semester. It is important to note that the end date of the internship to be registered should not exceed six months following the semester when academic requirements are completed. This implies that the later the internship is registered, the shorter is the time available to complete the internship.

Costs

If you are pursuing an internship for credit, the cost of the internship is proportional to the number of credits earned, with two exceptions:

if you are a full time student carrying three courses and plan to do a four-credit internship as your fourth course, there is no extra charge.

if you are a full time student during Spring or Fall semesters (not Summer Session), taking a one-credit internship as an extra course, there is no extra charge.

The processing fee for a 0-credit internship is currently €170. To be eligible for a 0- credit internship, you must have completed at least 30 university credits and have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Sometimes internships are paid, but often they are not. The issue of payment is up to the discretion of the employer, and will depend on many factors, including the industry and the size of the company. Legally, the employer is obliged to pay a minimum remuneration of €398,13 per month for an intern working full-time for over 3 months.

Requirements

Internships can be zero, one-credit, three-credit, or four-credit bearing (six-credit internships are only available to students who entered AUP prior to the 2009 – 2010 academic year).

A minimum of 120 hours is necessary to qualify for a zero, one- or three-credit internship. 160 hours are required for 4 credits. However, most interns work far more than this.

For a zero and one-credit internship, you must submit a “student evaluation and job description” form as well as an evaluation from your employer to the Internship Office. Three, four and six-credit internships involve the same requirements plus an interview with a relevant professional and an internship report. In the latter case, you are responsible for finding a faculty reader to oversee your academic work. The assignments must be submitted to the faculty reader for grading by the mid-semester date following your internship. Internships are evaluated on a Credit/No Credit basis only.

Duration

A credit bearing internship can be maximum nine months long. The maximum duration for non-credit bearing internships is 6 months.

Registration Process

You must provide the proper forms to the Internship Office before the internship begins, and submit assignments within a specific time frame after the internship is completed. The office will provide a checklist of required assignments, signatures and deadlines. It is not possible to obtain credits retroactively.
