Application Process

The recruiting process for an internship is often similar to that of a job, requiring a formal application (e.g. cover letter and resume) and selection interview. In some sectors competition may be fierce, so plan ahead and allow plenty of time for the search. A strong level of French will greatly enhance your chances of finding a desirable internship in France. Make early contact with the Career Development Office to obtain assistance. The AUP Career and Internship Offices do not place students in internships, but support them in establishing the first contact to employers. An internship search should be proactive and draw from all available resources: regular perusal of offers posted at AUP, research on potential employers, and networking with professional contacts obtained through acquaintances and relevant events. Each November, AUP organizes the annual International Careers Day, where professionals discuss their careers and offer advice. See Useful Resources »

Possible industries include but are not limited to market research, communication agencies, law firms, banking, publishing and media, teaching, the fashion industry, museums and art galleries, journalism, public relations firms, finance, the travel and hotel industry, multinationals, translation agencies, and non-governmental, governmental or international organizations.

Keep in mind

An internship may be pursued during Fall or Spring semesters or during the summer. If considering an internship during a normal semester, you should take into account the extra workload of the internship plus possible travel time. Students who serve as interns in private corporations and organizations during the academic year usually work about 15 hours per week or more. Students often take a lighter course load in order to have more time to devote to the internship. The summer is an ideal time to pursue a full time internship.

If pursuing an internship for university credit abroad, you must complete application materials and obtain approval from the Internship Office before your foreign internship begins. Verify whether the employer will require proof of student status and if any visa requirements may exist.
