Personal Computers

Professors at AUP expect all papers to be typed. Personal computers with word processing programs, printers, e-mail and internet access are available at the AUP computer labs. However, most students prefer to purchase their own laptop or personal computer. If you have your own computer, but do not have a printer, you can print your documents in the computer lab. If you do bring a laptop you should also bring a wireless network card (Pre-requisites for wireless access: Windows XP (Professional or Home Edition) with SP2, updated anti-virus software, an active ITS account and a supported WPA-compatible 802.11b, or 802.11g wireless network card.

Purchasing computer equipment in France can be expensive, though prices have been steadily dropping. It is now possible to purchase a good PC for approximately 600-900 euros and a laptop for around 700-1000 euros. The AUP Computer Lab can recommend retail shops in Paris to interested students.

If you plan to bring a computer with you from home, you should check with the manufacturer to determine if you will need a transformer in France and, if so, what kind. (Electrical current in France is 220 volts with a line frequency of 50 hertz cycles per second; transformers that correct voltage differences are readily available for purchase in Paris). In addition, you should bring the invoice/sales receipt with you in the event that you are questioned at French customs. You should explain that you purchased the computer outside of France for your studies, and it will be leaving with you when you finish your studies.

Household belongings

Most of the housing that AUP offers does not provide linens. Plan to bring towels and a set of sheets for a single bed. These can, of course, be purchased in Paris. Depending on the housing offer, blankets and pillows are usually provided. During Orientation, you will be advised where to purchase inexpensive items for your housing.

Clothing

Paris in autumn is mild with daily temperatures in September/October at an average of about 18°C . Winter temperatures vary between 4°C and 10°C (approximately 42°-55° Fahrenheit). You will need to bring warm clothing and a heavy coat for the winter months. Dress at AUP is casual as on most college campuses. Later, in Spring, around April/May, temperatures can vary - 16°-20°C.

Toiletries

Almost all personal and health care products you need can be found in Paris. It might be less expensive and practical in the beginning to bring a small supply of these to get you started.

Medication

Students taking medication should bring at least one month's supply, and the Student Affairs Office will help you contact a doctor in Paris once you arrive in order to arrange prescription renewals. To facilitate establishing the French equivalent for your medication, please obtain the "generic" or pharmaceutical name of your medication and bring a copy of the prescription. Students with any particular health care concerns can contact the Admissions Office, which will put you directly in touch with one of the English-speaking doctors who work with the University.

Shipping your belongings

Some students prefer to ship their belongings using an international shipping service, such as DHL or UPS. Please be aware that this can be expensive and complicated. When parcels arrive in France, there are often additional customs and handling charges and taxes due, and you have to make a trip out to the airport to recuperate your packages. It’s much less expensive and more convenient to pay for extra baggage and bring your things with you on your flight.
