Margery Arent Safir was an invited featured speaker at the Festival des Cinémas et Cultures de l’Amérique Latine held in Biarritz September 29-October 5. Her talk, “La réception de la littérature latino-américaine aux Etats-Unis,” dealt with both Anglophone and Hispanophone reception of the famous “Boom” authors—Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Gabriel García-Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, Octavio Paz, Manuel Puig among them—in the 1960s and 1970s, both in academia and among New York literati. Safir was also interviewed by Claude Fell, Professor of Hispanic Culture at l’Université de Paris-III (Sorbonne Nouvelle), and answered questions from the large festival public on the current state of Latino literature in the United States and the development of “Spanglish” as a literary language. A pleasant surprise: one of the audience members asking a question introduced herself as having been a student of Professor Safir’s at AUP some ten years ago.   [AUP - Posted 16 Nov 2003]
