Professor Wanklyn's paper, entitled "Etienne Delaune: un dessin préparatoire pour la nef offerte en 1551 à l'amiral Clinton", published by the Ecole du Louvre. |
In June 2003, a paper presented by George Wanklyn at the September 1997 international colloquium, Henri II et les Arts, was published by the Ecole du Louvre, included in a book of all of the papers given at the three-day colloquium. It was held at the Louvre and the Musée National de la Renaissance in Ecouen, and saw 31 scholars from Europe and the United States deliver papers on a broad variety of topics linking the patronage of the arts in France and King Henri II (1547-1559). Professor Wanklyn's paper, entitled "Etienne Delaune: un dessin préparatoire pour la nef offerte en 1551 à l'amiral Clinton," posits that a drawing in the collections of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France served as the "dessin du marché" for a goldsmith who executed a sumptuous royal gift offered by the French king to Lord Clinton, Earl of Lincoln, Lord High Admiral of England, on the occasion of his leading an extraordinary embassy to France.

Language Acquisition Research at AUP |
During September and October 2003, many AUP English-mother tongue students found themselves bumbling incoherencies in French before a computer screen, trying to describe the images presented there, in hopes of getting their five euros and free cinema pass. These lucky guinea pigs, forty in all, served as subjects for a CNRS project entitled Grammaticalisation and bilingualism in children and adults: implications for teaching and language disorders. The study, performed on controlled language groups (children and adults, monolinguals and bilinguals, successive and simultaneous acquisition), seeks to ascertain the critical period (that is, the most favorable age for second language acquisition) and the underlying processes involved in acquiring language. The project’s final aim is to provide beneficial information for second language teaching and for programs that focus on language disorders. Rebekah Rast coordinated the data collection, the EN/CL department provided the recording space, and the faculty of the French department assisted in identifying students with the correct language profile for the study.
