Jim Bittermann was a panelist in a discussion on Religion & Politics at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January. Other panel members included the Archbishop of Dublin, Diamuid Martin, K. Anthony Appiah, Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University, Bernard Guetta, editorialist at l'Express magazine, and Bo Straithe from the European University Institute in Italy. Bittermann spoke of his reporting on the French "veil controversy" for CNN and of his many years of covering the papacy of Jean-Paul II and the pope's influence on modern politics. Oleg Kobtzeff made a special presentation at the Rachmaninoff Musical Conservatory of Paris on the 70th anniversary of the "Association des Vitiaz"
 
On Sunday, February 15, Kobtzeff made a special presentation at the Rachmaninoff Musical Conservatory of Paris on the 70th anniversary of the "Association des Vitiaz". The "Vitiaz" is an NGO created in Estonia in the 1920s by the American YMCA. Fully independent since 1934, the "Vitiaz" have a chapter in France (where Kobtzeff is the President), Australia, Belgium, and now Russia. Kobtzeff and the Association des Vitiaz will launch an online geographic magazine called "Vitiaz" (the name of the admiral's oceanographic vessel and of the Association's old journal published between 1935 and 1974). Charlotte Lacaze is co-curating an exhibition provisionally entitled Augustin Gonfond et ses contemporains with Evelyne Duret, curator of the municipal Musée des Alpilles in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Two hour-long programs produced by Pat Thompson were recently broadcast on national television in the US on the Discovery Travel Channel. "Braving the Wild Waves" is an anthology of dramatic stories about people who risk working on the oceans from Alaska to Namibia. The other program, "The Pacific Graveyard" examines the lives of three groups of people who make their living on the Columbia River Bar which is considered the most dangerous stretch of water in the continental USA. Douglas Yates presented a paper on the history of the French oil industry at the Ministry of Finance (Bercy) on Tuesday, February 10. The paper, entitled "Croix de Guerre," was based on Yates' biographical research on the French oil patrons.
