As the Managing Editor of the World Cultures Report project that he is currently launching in cooperation with Professor Helmut Anheier, Director of the Center for Civil Society at the School of Public Policy and Social Research, UCLA, Isar has worked with the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development to organize a workshop on “Cultures, Globalization Processes and Development” that will be held in the Peace Palace, The Hague, on September 20-22.

Scholars' Facsimiles & Reprints, Ann Arbor, Michigan, has just published Letters and Sketches Addressed to Samuel Putnam Avery 1884-1891 by Ignacio Leon y Escosura and compiled, edited and transcribed from manuscript by Madeleine Fidell Beaufort, Richard P. Welcher and Jeanne K. Welcher. Beaufort was responsible for the Introduction, Notes and Appendixes.

Susan Cure attended the annual meeting of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) in New Orleans from May 23-27, 2004 and a preliminary Educator's Meeting (ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators) from May 21-23, at which she presented a "Biggest Challenge."

 

She also attended the "3ème Congrès Annuel de la Société Francophone de Thérapie Cellulaire et Génique" at the Groupe Hospitalier Necker-Enfants Malades in Paris on June 28 and 29, 2004.

Gerardo della Paolera produced a paper co-authored with Martin Grandes (AUP and DELTA-ENS) entitled "The True Measure of Country Risk: A Primer on the Interrelations between Solvency and the Polity Structure of Emerging Markets: Argentina 1886-1892" to be presented in the XI LACEA-Brookings Conference to be held in San José de Costa Rica next November.

Waddick Doyle's chapter on the history of French television was published in the new volume "Contemporary World Television” edited by John Sinclair. The volume was published by the British Film Institute in Britain and the University of California Press in the USA.

 

Contemporary World Television looks at the role of television as a nation-builder and at how the transformations in television have affected the public interest and society across the globe.

Five of Hall Gardner's poems (Fruits Forbidden, Horror Story, Craps, Snow Leopard, Still in Search of Cathay) appear in Sheets: an international anthology of poetry and prose, edited by Lois Claire Kincannon (Dancing Ink Press, 2004).

 

The distinguished contributors include Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Henry Taylor, multiple-award winning Israeli author, Yitzhak Oren and Washington poet-of the-year, E. Ethelbert Miller.

Lissa Lincoln presented a paper entitled "Social Psychosis and the Law in Albert Camus" at the 12th International Conference of the Law and Literature Association of Australia, hosted by Griffith University Law School and the University of Queensland held on July 9-11 in Brisbane, Australia. Ann Mott has been asked to serve on the Board of the European Writing Centers Association.

 

The European Writing Centers Association [EWCA] is a regional affiliate of the International Writing Centers Association [IWCA] and aims at supporting Writing Center activities across Europe, cultivating the cross-cultural dialogue with a focus on vision, mission, and action, concerning organizational and educational issues.

In August 2004, Everyman's Library published Richard Pevear's translation (done in collaboration with Larissa Volokhonsky) of The Complete Short Novels of Anton Chekhov.  

Chekhov is regarded as both the greatest Russian storyteller and the father of modern drama. His short novels are brought together in one volume for the first time, in a masterly new translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.

David Pike was awarded a five-year travel and research grant by the Charles Delmar Foundation of Washington, DC. His target is to complete by 2010 five books that have had to remain on his back-burner for up to three decades. Most of the funds will be spent on his AUP and AGS research assistants.

David Tresilian will attend two meetings in September in the Islamic Republic of Iran on behalf of UNESCO: "Demonstrating Success in Cultural Heritage and Environmental Conservation through Cultural and Ecotourism" in Masouleh from September 18-24 and the South and Central Asian Man-and-the-Biosphere Network Conference in Zibakenar from September 25-28. Both Masouleh and Zibakenar are in the north-west of Iran, near the Caspian Sea.

Three articles by Professor Jerome Charyn were recently featured in Le Figaro, the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune and Le Monde

 

In July, Figaro Magazine published Jerome Charyn's essay, "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," as part of its cover story on Americans viewing America. On July 11, the City section of the Sunday New York Times published his memoir on Marlon Brando, entitled "True Grit". The article was republished in the International Herald Tribune on July 13. On July 23, Le Monde published his homage to Lance Armstrong, "Un Grand Cow-Boy."

From July 11-13, Yudhishthir Raj Isar was the Master of Ceremonies for the conference entitled “Sharing Cultures: a contribution to cultural policy for Europe” organized by the European Cultural Foundation in Rotterdam, The Netherlands; this event brought together over 170 leading cultural operators, artists and policy-makers from 35 countries and resulted in the presentation of a ‘cultural plan of action for Europe’ that was presented on July 13 to the European Union Ministers of Culture and Education who were meeting in the city.

Yudhishthir Raj Isar was in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to run the conference “Heritage Conservation: New Alliances For Past Present and Future”
 

In his capacity as Special Adviser to the World Monuments Fund, Isar was in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to run the conference entitled “Heritage Conservation: New Alliances For Past Present and Future” that he had organized in cooperation with the Sri Lankan National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

 

Bringing together some 100 conservation architects, activists, scholars and officials from the countries of South and Southeast Asia, the conference was designed both to explore crucial issues in this field as well as launch a new dynamic of public-private sector collaboration.

Margery Arent Safir's article, "Uncertain Ancestors," dealing with Mexican author Carlos Fuentes' novelistic use of quantum physics, has been accepted for publication in the November edition of Review 69, a journal of Latin American literature and arts in New York. An earlier, French version of the article was published in the journal America by Presse de la Sorbonne Nouvelle.
