|
|
|
|
|
Three
members of the Comparative Literature and English Department have
contributed to a major new reference work, of particular interest to AUP.
Brian Brazeau, Roy Rosenstein, and Geoff Gilbert wrote entries for the
Encyclopedia of the French Atlantic, which will be published by ABC Clio
press in 2005. The encyclopedia, under the general editorship of Bill
Marshall from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, aims to open up
fresh ways of articulating multiple relations between France and the
Americas; this is an important corrective to a current tendency to think
in terms of oppositions between France and the USA. The CL/EN department
plans to bring Bill Marshall to AUP at some point in the coming academic
year to speak about this project. |

Jerome
Charyn was interviewed by novelist Frederic Tuten (about his latest
novel, The Green Lantern), in the Fall 2004 issue of BOMB,
America's leading quarterly of the avant-garde. His article on American
politics, "Angels in America," was on the front page of Le Monde,
Sunday, September 26. He was interviewed by editor Jacques Buob in the
October 2 issue of LeMonde2. His portrait of Jewish cops in the
NYPD was the cover story of the City section of The New York Times
(Sunday edition) on September 19. An essay-article about his book,
Gangsters and Gold Diggers, was one of the cover stories of
Midstream, September/October 2004: "The tone of Gangsters and
Gold Diggers is by turns mischievous, touching, riotous and elegiac.
But the book is above all great fun, the most fun you're likely to find
between two covers in a long time." Charyn is currently being filmed by
France 3 for a full-length documentary about him and Paris. |

Geoff Gilbert 's book, Before Modernism Was: Modern History
and the Constituency of Writing, is published this month by Palgrave
Press |
|
|
|
|
|
Gilbert's
book, Before Modernism Was: Modern History and the Constituency of
Writing, is published this month by Palgrave Press in London. The
book is a cultural study of modernist writing; it places modernist
writing within the textures of modern history. Texts by Virginia Woolf,
Henry James, Sigmund Freud, Wyndham Lewis, Gertrude Stein, Bronislaw
Malinowski, and others are read through a range of figures that
construct and disrupt modern meanings: books are studies alongside
reports of ghosts in empty London properties, debates about juvenile
delinquency, fears of rabies, worries about the place of Poland in
Europe, and the difficulties experienced in giving up smoking.
A small conference is planned to take place at AUP towards the end of
the semester to launch the book. |
