Jerome Charyn was the guest of honor at the "Littératures Métisses" festival and at the Main Library in Evry

 

Professor Charyn was the guest of honor at the “Littératures Métisses” festival in Poitou-Charentes, October 21-23, where he spoke at the library in Poitiers and visited the prison in Niort, meeting with a “class” of prisoners who had read some of his books. He was the guest of honor at the main library in Evry on October 16, where he spoke about his books in relation to “the city between fiction and fact.”

Margery Arent Safir's article "Uncertain Ancestors" about the use of quantum physics in a novel by Carlos Fuentes is the featured article in Review: Literature and Arts of the Americas, published by Routledge.  Safir has been invited to contribute an essay on Fuentes's work to the special edition of Cahiers de l'Herne being dedicated to him.

Petermichael von Bawey was invited to attend the International Conference on Social Science Research from November 11 to 14 in New Orleans where he presented his paper "Concrete Markings: Street Art/Wall Art." He also participated in daily discussions with panelists on research methods in Social Science.

 
 

Jim Bittermann and Pat Thompson were delegates to the 2004 News Xchange conference

 
Jim Bittermann and Pat Thompson were delegates to the 2004 News Xchange conference in Vilamaura, Portugal, Nov. 17-19. The forum brings together more than 400 television news executives from all over the world, and is sponsored by the European Broadcast Union. Among the topics under consideration at this year's conference were the role of the UN and aid agencies in reporting humanitarian crises like Darfur, the evolving role of the Arabic television networks, undercover journalism and hidden cameras, and protection of journalists in war zones and in the local newsrooms.

On November 11, Randall Blatt performed in a concert at the Salle Gustave Eiffel in the Eiffel Tower for the opening ceremony of the General Annual Convention of Sixth International. In addition to performing piano solo, he accompanied world famous tenor Francisco Araiza, Juan Carlos Echeverry, tenor, Amy Lavietes, soprano, and Rebecca Tepfer, mezzo-soprano with the string ensemble Quintacordes.

Thunder's Mouth Press will publish a new edition of 'Gangsters and Gold Diggers' by Jerome Charyn

 

In December, Thunder’s Mouth Press will publish a quality paperback edition of Gangsters and Gold Diggers, Charyn's book on the culture of Broadway. The University of Poitiers is currently preparing a DVD about him and his work.

 
 

A telefilm written by Martin Copeland was screened on television

 
A telefilm written by Martin Copeland, Le Naufrage du Rainbow Warrior, was screened on the satellite television channel "13ème Rue" in August with an introduction and debate led by Bruno Masure as part of the channel's theme week "scandales politiques." Professor Copeland's co-written Western feature film Texas Rangers arrived on DVD in France in September."

Susan Cure was one of the translators for the English version of a book by one of her colleagues, Alain Bernot, called Genome, Transcriptome and Proteome Analysis, and published by John Wiley and Sons, 2004.

Waddick Doyle gave four visiting lectures in November

 
Waddick Doyle gave four visiting lectures in November. One on a comparative study of media deregulation in a conference organized by the Public Service Broadcasting Council of Denmark. This was reported in the Danish newspaper Politiken and on Danish television. He gave two at Northwestern University in Chicago: one on Brand Sacralization to the graduate program in Marketing Communications at the Medill School of Journalism and one on Silvio Berlusconi: “Disruption and Transfiguration in the Italian Public Sphere” to the Center for Global Communication and Culture. He was also invited to the Center for Global Communication Research at the University of Southern Illinois where he gave a paper entitled “Did Media Deregulation End with the War in Iraq?“

 
 

Steven Ekovich gave visiting lectures on U.S. foreign and defense policy and on "The Formation, Identity and Society of the American Nation"

 
Steven Ekovich gave a series of lectures at the French military academy St. Cyr on U.S. defense policy. He lectured to French lycée professors of the Académie de Rouen on "Post 9/11 America" and delivered another lecture at the Université Catholique d'Etudes Supérieures on "The Formation, Identity and Society of the American Nation." He was invited on a lecture tour of Morocco at the beginning of December.  Ekovich appeared twice on the prime-time radio program Travaux Publiques to comment on U.S. foreign policy and the recent presidential election.  He was also appointed to the editorial board of the European Union quarterly review EuroFuture.

Ali Fatemi was invited to participate in a seminar on Equity Markets Microstructures at the Bernard Baruch Business College of the City University of New York (CUNY) held from November 10-14 at their campus. He presented AUP's Master of Science in Finance program which is scheduled to be launched in October 2005.

Jérôme Game contributed four articles and chapters of books in 2004. For the book Poésie, détours, he wrote the chapter entitled "Du bruit à l'extérieur — ou pourquoi j'ai écrit certains de mes textes en anglais." In the March number of Action poétique, for the dossier "Poétisme," he contributed a brief article entitled "D'une affirmation intempestive." In the September number of the same periodical, he is the author of the brief article "Centripètifuge" for the dossier on the poetry of Danielle Collobert. For the book Deleuze et les écrivains, Professor Game wrote the chapter "La répétition différentiante dans la poétique deleuzienne: temporalité, bégaiement et ritournelle."

Yudhishthir Raj Isar gave speeches and lectures in New Delhi, Torino, Genoa and Brussels

 
Yudhishthir Raj Isar was a Keynote Speaker on “linkages between tangible and intangible heritage” at the 20th anniversary conference of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) held in New Delhi from November 2 to 4. On November 15 in Torino, Italy, he gave the inaugural address for the ninth Corso di perfezionamento per responsabile di progetti culturali organized by the Fitzcarraldo Foundation and followed this up on November 15-16 by two course modules on cultural policy issues. On November 20 in Genoa, Italy, he presented a paper entitled “An inter-cultural deontology: utopianism or utopian realism” at the international symposium entitled “When Culture Makes the Difference: The Heritage, Arts and Media in Multicultural Society” organized by the Associazione per l’Economia della Cultura in co-operation with the University of Genova. On November 25, in Brussels, he addressed the Culture Committee of the European Parliament and met with the European Commission’s Director-General of Education and Culture in his capacity as the newly-elected President of the European Forum for Arts and Heritage (EFAH).

Lissa Lincoln presented a paper entitled "Le phénomène des cultural studies: décadence ou renaissance des études littéraires?" at the Colloque de la Société d'Etudes de la Littérature Française du XXe Siècle, "Littérature et Sociologie", at the Université Michel de Montaigne Bordeaux 3, which took place on November 23-25.

On November 24, Terence Murphy addressed the Association des Membres de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques of the 14th arrondissement of Paris on the subject of contemporary American culture. On November 30, he participated in Les Débats du Citoyen at the Sénat. The subject: "L'Europe vue d'Amérique aujourd'hui : quel regard les Américains portent-ils sur nous?"

Professor Emeritus David Pike was the guest of Noel Forgeard, chairman of Airbus

 
David Pike (with 16 other members of the Anglo-American Press Association) was the guest on November 23 of Noel Forgeard, chairman of Airbus, who invited the group to visit its headquarters in Toulouse for a full-day tour of the plant; its Chief Marketing Officer John Leahy (from New York) showed how precarious was the future of Boeing.

Claudia Roda will present a paper titled "Participatory System Design as a Tool for Learning" at the 2004 IADIS International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in Digital Age (CELDA 2004). Roda and Julie Thomas have been asked to submit entries to the HCI (Human Computer Interaction) Encyclopedia.

Margery Safir 's work has been featured in Barcelona
 

Margery Safir's talk in September at Kosmopolis '04 in Barcelona ("Mr. Snow's Parenthesis: Beyond the Two Cultures") has been selected by the organizers to be featured in their digital publication of the event.  A number of Safir's photographs of the Argentine writer Julio Cortazar were featured in a photo exhibition at the Barcelona Center for Contemporary Culture and will now be featured in a journal of cinema as well as in an exhibition in several Spanish cultural centers.

 
 
Alexandra Svoronou will teach statistics at the University of Montreal
 
Next semester, Alexandra Svoronou will be on sabbatical in Montreal, Canada. She has been offered to teach a statistics course at the University of Montreal, in French, to a class of 70 students.

 
 
The SIEFAR, whose founding members include Kathleen Chevalier , has recently received two new grants
 
In 2000 Kathleen Wilson-Chevalier was one of the founding members of the Société Internationale pour l’Étude des Femmes de l’Ancien Régime (SIEFAR). She continues to sit on the governing board and has assumed the role of editor-in-chief of its ever-growing bilingual on-line dictionary devoted to Ancien Régime women (visible at www.siefar.org ). On November 18, the Ministère délégué à la Recherche (Mission pour la parité dans la recherche et l'enseignement supérieur) attributed one of its three Irène Joliot-Curie awards of €10,000 to the SIEFAR organization for its active support of women in research (for further information see http://www.recherche.gouv.fr/discours/2004/dpprixijcurie04.pdf ). Moreover, the Florence Gould Foundation has just accorded its second grant of $10,000 to the SIEFAR dictionary project. The SIEFAR is particularly grateful to Michael Vincent, former Vice-President of Academic Affairs at AUP, for his unrelenting support, and to the A.W. Mellon Foundation.

Jérôme Game delivered two scholarly papers earlier this year. In March, he spoke at the colloquium Denis Roche: J'écris donc je photographie organized at the Ecole Normale Supérieure - Lettres et Sciences Humaines, Lyon, on "L'image/texte: hybridation de l'absence chez Denis Roche." In July, he presented a paper at the Annual Conference of the Society for French Studies, held at Wolfson College, Cambridge University, entitled "Materialist Feminisms: Desire and Sexuality in Three Contemporary French Women Poets."
