Petermichael von Bawey ’s article "Berlin Wall Memorials: Historical Lessons and Lesions" was published in 'Lo Straniero'

 

Petermichael von Bawey’s article “Berlin Wall Memorials: Historical Lessons and Lesions” was published in Lo Straniero, #43. He has been invited to present his paper “Breaking the Law: Berlin Wall Fugitives” at the 30th IMISE Conference in Rome, July 3-8, where he will also chair the panel on “History and Law.” From July 24-29 he will be in Malta attending the 10th ISSEI Conference, where he will speak on “A European Identity: The Berlin Wall from Frontier to Memorial” in the workshop on “Places, Narratives and lieux de mémoire: The Role of the Past in the Present.”

Susan Cure participated in the organization of the  "Colloque Dystrophies des Ceintures"

 

Susan Cure helped organize a conference on May 12 and 13 in Evry: "Colloque Dystrophies des Ceintures" (Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Symposium). It was attended by about 250 scientists from all over the world. LGMD is a diverse group of rare genetic diseases which affect specific muscles; some forms are severe and others are mild, with some patients needing wheelchairs at adolescence and others retaining the ability to walk until late adulthood.

Steven Ekovich published “La Géosociologie de la Diaspora Arménienne” in 'Géostratégiques'

 

Steven Ekovich published “La Géosociologie de la Diaspora Arménienne” in Géostratégiques (No. 12, April 2006). On March 30 and April 6 he was a guest lecturer at the University of Bordeaux on the sources of U.S. foreign policy. On May 11 he gave a talk on the American vision of the role of Europe in Africa at a conference held at the European Union’s Institute for Security Studies and organized by the Union de l’Institut des Hautes Etudes de Défense Nationale. On May 17 Ekovich gave a talk on the American vision of Iran at the Fondation pour la Recherche Stratéqique. He commented twice on French television on the trial of Zacarias Moussaoui. He was also the organizer and moderator of AUP's fourth annual President’s Conference for the Advancement of Scholarship held at the U.S. Embassy in Paris on the subject "France and the United States of America: Anatomy of a Long Alliance" held on May 24.

On May 15, Ali Fatemi was invited to represent the Graduate School of Business at the special conference of the French Exchange Authority (AMF) dedicated to risks: "Colloque scientifique de l'AMF: les risques financiers portés par les ménages - Deuxième partie: quelles pistes pour protéger l'épargne?" held at the Palais du Luxembourg.

Hall Gardner spoke at the conference, NATO’s Raison d’être, on the “Contemporary Relevance of the 1948 Vandenberg Resolution” at Sciences Po, Amphithéâtre Jacques Chapsal in Paris on May 17. Other speakers included: Yves Boyer, Professor at Sciences Po, Deputy Director to the Foundation for Strategic Research (FRS); Frédéric Bozo, Research Fellow at IFRI, Professor at the University La Sorbonne Paris 3; Sherwood McGinnis, Political Advisor, US Mission to NATO; Justin Vaisse, Professor at Sciences Po, Member of the Policy Planning Staff, French Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Marcin Zaborowski, Research Fellow at ISS-EU (Institute for Security Studies, European Union).

In May Linda Martz attended a conference at the University of Hamburg on "Inclusion and Exclusion in the Long 19th Century". Her paper was entitled "The Suffragettes and British Imperial Citizenship."

An article co-authored by Sally Murray (Database Librarian), “User Satisfaction Survey and Usage of an Electronic Desktop Document Delivery Service at an Academic Medical Library,” will be presented by co-author Ellen Sayed at Mednet 2006: 11th World Congress on Internet in Medicine (Toronto, 14-19 October 2006). Originally published in Medical Reference Services Quarterly 22, no. 4 (Winter 2003), the article was based on work done by Murray at the Biomedical Library of the University of South Alabama.

Susan Perry led an AUP delegation to Geneva to attend the US hearings before the UN Committee Against Torture. This is the first time that students have been able to attend a UNOG hearing as representatives of the university. The Committee Against Torture was pleased to congratulate the United States on the announced closing of the Guantanamo Bay Detention facility, and welcomed the ensuing dialogue between the Committee and the US government.
