Richard Beardsworth participated in the second plenary session of 'Telos: Journal of Critical Theory' in NYC on the 13-14 of January 2007. The subjects of discussion over the two days were international politics, religion and terrorism, the Regensburg address by Pope Benedict XVI and Islamic modernity, and the contemporary relation between reason and faith. His essay 'Modernity and Excess in Contemporary French Thought' appeared in Telos 137 (December 2006).

Jean Tardieu's poem "Insomnia," as translated to English by Cheryl Caesar, was one of the texts interpreted in dance by Eva Perrotta, in her piece "Promenades Soporifiques," performed at La Guardia School of Performing Arts in New York City on 12 January, and at the Triskelion Art Space in Williamsburg, New York on 26 January.

Charyn, Jerome

Jerome Charyn published revised French translations of Bernard Malamud’s The Assistant and Herbert Gold’s Fathers in “Les Oubliés,” the collection he edits for Les Editions Metropolis in Geneva.  His long essay-review of Clint Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters from Iwo Jima” appeared in the January 18 issue of Die Zeit, Germany’s most influential weekly newspaper.  While in New York, he scouted locations for the semi-fictional documentary on the Empire State Building that he is writing with director William Karel for Canal Plus.

Waddick Doyle  was interviewed by The Observer about the creation of France 24, and gave two academic papers in the month of November.  He gave a paper at NYU's Department of Culture and Communication conference entitled "Coming Unglued in the French Suburbs: The Logic of the French Riots Coverage".  He and Jayson Harsin also gave a paper entitled "Branding Political Subjects" at the National Communication Association's conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Elder, Tanya

Tanya Elder will be on leave during Spring semester 2007 to conduct research on communication and development in Tamil Nadu, South India. While in the field, Elder will explore AUP student internship possibilities for summer 2008 in NGOs, schools, and businesses. Elder will also be working on Teaching in a Pluricultural Environment, a book on the experiences and innovative methods used by AUP professors to teach in multicultural environments.

Jérôme Game was invited as a keynote speaker to ‘Psychoanalysis and the Arts & Humanities’, an International Workshop organized by the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies of the University of London on Saturday 27 January 2007. Professor Game’s paper was entitled "Culture as symptom, creation as pharmakon".

Hall Gardner was interviewed on France 24 on the Iraq Study Group report (December 7, 2006).  His article "Overview of Security Concerns of the 'Wider Black Sea' Region" was published in Forum - Center for Strategic Research and Documentation (Fall 2006) in Macedonian and English.  His article "Vers 'les Communautés régionales de sécurité' L'OTAN, l'ONU, et la résolution 1948 de Vandenberg" was published in Géostrategiques No 14 (November 2006).

Oleg Kobtzeff will appear on public TV discussing Kodiak Island’s indigenous people in ARTE’s series “Arts du Mythe” (http://www.artevod.com/menuConsultation.do?rubric=7&subRubric=3&method=displayElements).  In a far less serious mode, he will be discussing Champagne, the legend of the Holy Grail, and the mysteries of Parisian and French historic geography on “Uncorked”, an INDHB documentary coming this March (see it online at  http://www.mojohd.com/).

Farhad Nomani was invited to the Université de Savoie, Chambéry campus, on December 5-6, for the presentation of his recent book, Class and Labor in Iran: Did the Revolution Matter?  On January 17 he was invited by the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales (CERI)-Siences Po to present the book and discuss its subject of the accounting of structural changes in classes in Iran.

David Pike was among the members of the Press Association invited to breakfast on November 28 by the Turkish Ambassador to France, Osman Taney Koruturk (son of the former Turkish President). Among the topics discussed was the plan, already initiated by the Ambassador, to hold an international conference on the subject of the Armenian massacre of 1915, and to invite speakers from all countries with a stake in the controversy: Turkey, Armenia, Russia, Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, Austria, Hungary, Germany, France, the UK, and the US. It was proposed that the conference link up with the History Teaching/History Learning Projects sponsored by the WAIS think-tank at Stanford University, and that the Hoover Institution with its vast resources participate in the endeavor.

Michel Rakotomavo was invited by Alstom to participate in their “People Quest” event that took place on December 11-15 in Torino, Italy. The event gathered 80 high potential managers from the South Europe/Israel region, as well as selected students and teachers from local Universities. People Quest aims to establish key managerial practices, by providing managers with fundamental and cross-functional training modules, and to heighten team spirit across the region and so create the conditions for effective networking.The event combined executive training sessions with talks given by officials of the company.

Thompson, Pat

Pat Thompson was Line Producer for an episode of the CBS hit series “The Amazing Race” which was shot in 14 locations in France and broadcast in the U.S. last month.  The adventure program is syndicated to over 100 countries.  Three AUP production students were hired as production assistants on the France segment:  Jennifer Costa, Nikki Petersen, and Alhan Keser. Professor Thompson was also re-elected vice-president of the Association de la Presse Etrangere, one of the largest foreign press groups in France.

The third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Gabon, co-authored by Douglas A. Yates, has just been released by Rowman & Littlefield’s Scarecrow Press.  Providing hundreds of cross-referenced entries, a comprehensive chronology, maps, and a ten-part scientific bibliography with over 1,400 books, articles, chapters and reports on Gabon, it is the 101st volume in the comprehensive “Historical Dictionary of Africa” series, which covers the entire continent.
