Contributors examine how the genre both mirrors and focuses the personal/ethnic/spiritual, how it interfaces with national literatures and histories, and how the generic identity of detective fiction has evolved over time. Included are discussions of novels and short stories from American, Argentine, British, Canadian, French, German, and Japanese national literatures from the mid-19th to the early 21st centuries, with a chapter on a suffragette detective series by Linda Martz and one on Chester Himes by Alice Craven.
