UIL related policies of national governments

 

This session would present national level policies aimed at fostering university-industry linkages as a way to stimulate the innovative capacity of firms, and also the experience with these policies. The policies examined would include ones impinging upon the allocation of research funding, the treatment of intellectual property rights, the organization of the research infrastructure, incentives for R&D, and incentives for science parks, spin-offs and start-ups.

This session would focus on policies instituted by universities to effectively engage with firms, while at the same time sustaining their academic mission. The session would explore the measures introduced by different university systems around world and indicate how university ownership, its proposed mission, the degree of autonomy, the creation of a technology licensing office, the importance given to research, the incentives offered to researchers, and other factors affect the emergence and success of university industry linkages.

Corporate Strategies of MNCs and SMEs

 

The purpose of this session would be to examine the different strategies adopted by multinational corporations and small and medium sized enterprises in their efforts to enhance innovation capabilities through contacts with universities and institutes. The session would review the experience from selected countries, the some of the key lessons learned and the likely future shape of linkages between the business sector and universities with reference to specific industries.
