The George & Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights, and Conflict Prevention is honored to host Marta Havryshko, who will give an online presentation on "Women, Power and Violence: Researching Sexual Crimes during the Holocaust in Times of Russia's War in Ukraine".

Unjustified Russia's invasion of Ukraine made Ukrainian women and girls particularly vulnerable to different forms of violence. Ukrainian authorities, human rights activists, volunteers, and ordinary citizens report cases of sexual assaults by Russian soldiers. It actualizes research on the peculiarities of wartime sexual violence compared to that committed in times of peace. Who are the primary targets of sexual assaults in conflict zones? How do women's ethnic, political and religious identity, social status, and age make a difference in the situation of sexual aggression? What are the specificities of sexual violence in respect to genocide? Those and other questions will be analyzed in the lecture of Dr. Marta Havryshko, a Ukrainian refugee scholar whose studies are mainly concentrated on the sexual violence during the Second World War and Holocaust in Ukraine.

Dr. Marta Havryshko is an Associate Researcher at the Department of Contemporary History at the I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences (Lviv). She is a Babyn Yar Interdisciplinary Studies Institute director of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center (Kyiv). Also, currently, she is a URIS Fellow at Basel University. Her research interests primarily focus on gender, sexuality, and violence during World War II and the Holocaust in Ukraine, feminism, nationalism, and militarism. Currently, she is developing her book project on sexual violence during the Holocaust in Ukraine.
