At the crossroads of Europe and Africa, this three-day study trip to Brussels explores how colonial histories continue to shape both public space and cultural expression. Moving between museums, exhibitions, and neighborhoods, students engage with a range of perspectives, from institutional narratives at the AfricaMuseum to contemporary debates in the exhibition Postcolonial?. A visit to Matongé offers insight into the city’s African diasporic presence, while stops at the Hergé and Comics Art Museums invite a closer look at how popular culture has contributed to colonial imaginaries. Combining historical inquiry with attention to visual and material culture, the trip encourages students to read the city itself as a site where past and present intersect.
