2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the entry of the United States into World War I. The arrival of General Pershing’s troops led to the Second Battle of the Marne where the the last German offensive was stopped only 60 kilometers from Paris. The Grande Guerre was truly international. Besides the multicultural aspect of the American ranks, the troops on all sides drew from the empires of the belligerents. World War I was also a total war, mobilizing the home fronts and the industrial capacities of all sides. So, the role of women during hostilities changed their lives and perceptions of their power. This trip investigates not only the military dimensions of the war, but the social, cultural and economic sides of the world’s first total war, precursor to World War II.
