Professor Caballer joined the Department of Computer Science, Math & Science at the American University of Paris in September 2018. He obtained his PhD in 2007, with a thesis on marine mollusk taxonomy and systematics. He has a broad vision on the patterns of distribution of marine biodiversity, gained through his participation in numerous projects and surveys in: Antarctica, Costa Rica, Cuba, French Guadeloupe, Guyana, Macaronesian Islands, Martinique, Portugal, Spain, Venezuela, etc. He has collaborated with, or worked in many research institutions, including: the Oceanology Institute of Cuba (OI), the INbio in Costa Rica, the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), National Maritime Experimental University of the Caribbean and the Oriente University in Venezuela, the Natural History Museum in Tenerife, and the National Natural History Museum (MNHN) in Paris.

He has trained biology students and taught classes on biodiversity, in both the field and the classroom, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including teenagers (“Scientific Youth” Program, Venezuela). He has experience in Natural History Collections curation and digitization, and also as an editor for scientific journals and biodiversity databases (i.e. World Register of Marine Species - WoRMS).

Working in developing countries he acquired skills in international cooperation, getting to act as an adviser on environmental issues to some governments and several coastal communities.

Additionally, professor Caballer gained expertise in environmental management and stewardship after his work at the OAG Public Foundation, created by mandate of the European Union as an environmental compensation measure for the construction, near by a SACs of the Nature 2000 network, of a large marine infrastructure in the Canary Islands.

His current research interests are: marine biodiversity exploration, the use of new technologies as tools to accelerate the catalog of life, marine mollusks taxonomy and systematics, untangling how speciation is driven by environmental conditions and the different kinds of barriers to gene flow, and the study of fluorescent pigments and other natural products with medical applications associated to marine sea slugs.
