Immerse yourself

Imagine studying the French language not only in a university classroom, but in the corner cafe where you order coffee, the clubs where you dance with friends, and the very streets on which you walk to school.

AUP’s carefully crafted French programs offer rigorous instruction in the French language—reviewing grammar and vocabulary, and improving pronunciation, writing, speaking and listening skills—while allowing a firsthand introduction to French culture both in and outside the classroom.

Students taking French Immersion take classes from Monday-Friday from 9am-1pm, as well as some outings in and around Paris too.

French Immersion is a 4-credit class (for those who opt to take the class for credit).

Students who take French Immersion must take AUP’s online French Placement test once they confirm their attendance at AUP Summer School. This allows for them to be placed into the class that best suits their current level of French. Students will be placed into one of four classes ranging from very introductory French for those with no experience, to a high intermediate course for those who have a good familiarity of French and who wish to express more complex ideas and attitudes; these four different class levels range from A1-B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am taking French Immersion but I’m worried that the class will be too easy/too hard. Can I switch to another level if this is the case?

All students taking French Immersion must take a placement test before beginning the class, so you will be placed in a class that is deemed appropriate to your current level of French. However, if your professor feels that you might thrive and excel in a different class with a different level, they will help you switch into a different class. This process is facilitated at Orientation and on the first day of class. Please note, however, that students cannot decide the class/level to which they are assigned.

I want to take French Immersion for credit, but my home institution will only award credit if I place into a class of a specific level of French. Can I pick the class or level?

No, students cannot decide the level or class into which they place. All students must take AUP’s French placement test, and this determines the student’s level and the class into which they will be registered. Should you place into a class wherein you would not be granted credit from your home institution, you are free to switch to take the class as an auditor instead, provided you switch within the allotted timeframe, as noted on the Summer School Calendar here. Should you have questions about French placement, please contact admissions [at] aup.edu (admissions[at]aup[dot]edu) with your questions.
