Few works have altered contemporary moral thought as profoundly as Carol Gilligan’s. By attending to voice, relationship and the forms of experience excluded by dominant models of moral development, her work opened a conceptual space from which the ethics of care would emerge and subsequently transform feminist theory, psychology, philosophy and democratic thought.
More than four decades after In a Different Voice, the questions raised by Gilligan’s work have lost none of their urgency. What does it mean to hear a voice politically? What forms of relationship sustain or silence it? And what might democracy look like when care, responsiveness and the capacity to listen are understood as conditions of democratic life?
For this special session of the Care and Democracy Seminar, Carol Gilligan returns to these questions and to the contemporary possibilities of care at a moment of profound democratic uncertainty. The lecture will be followed by an extended discussion with the audience.
