Care and Democracy Seminar programme
Care theory has transformed the way feminist thought approaches dependency, vulnerability and social reproduction. Yet one question remains surprisingly underdeveloped: what does care do to masculinity?
If care is constitutive of social life rather than a disposition assigned to women, its implications for masculinity reach considerably further than the redistribution of domestic labour. They concern the formation of subjects, the organization of dependency, the political meanings attached to strength and vulnerability, and the gendered distribution of responsibility itself.
This symposium brings feminist philosophy, political theory, psychology and masculinity studies into conversation to ask how masculinities might be rethought from the standpoint of care. What forms of masculinity are sustained by the disavowal of dependency? What happens when vulnerability is acknowledged rather than displaced? Can practices of care transform masculine subjectivities as well as the institutions and social relations through which masculinity is produced?
The closing symposium of the 2026 autumn cycle thus turns toward one of the emerging frontiers of care theory: the possibility of thinking masculinity, emancipation and democratic responsibility together.

The Care and Democracy Seminar is jointly organized by the Center for Critical Democracy Studies at the American University of Paris and the ISJPS (CNRS–Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), bringing together two major research environments around a shared inquiry into care, democracy and contemporary political thought. This partnership gives the series its distinctive Franco-American, interdisciplinary character and creates a lasting space for intellectual exchange between the two institutions.
