Please join us for a lecture by Ruth E. Iskin. She is the author of Mary Cassatt Between Paris and New York: The Making of a Transatlantic Legacy, as well as several acclaimed books on modern art, collecting, and visual culture.
Title of lecture: "Mary Cassatt: New Perspectives on her Art and Life"
Born in Pennsylvania, Cassatt spent most of her adult life in Paris and at her château in the Oise countryside, becoming a central member of the Impressionist circle while maintaining her identity as an American. She embraced France as her home, creating a remarkable cultural bridge between the two nations. To mark the centenary of her death, the Musée d'Orsay is honoring Cassatt with the landmark exhibition Mary Cassatt: L'indépendante, the first major retrospective devoted to her by a French national museum, opening on October 6.
Through a selection of Cassatt's paintings, pastels, and prints, Ruth E. Iskin will explore Cassatt’s art and life, including her friendship with Edgar Degas, commitment to women's suffrage, and lasting influence beyond her own art-making. As a trusted advisor to prominent American collectors, Cassatt also played an extraordinary role in shaping American collections of French Impressionist art.
Join us for an engaging lecture and lively Q&A as we celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Mary Cassatt, an artist who embraced France as her home and secured her place as an important figure of the Impressionist movement.
