The Center for Writers & Translators Presents

A Conversation about The Sami Problem with Kathrine Nedrejord

We are delighted that novelist Kathrine Nedrejord will join us to discuss Sameproblemet (The Sami Problem), which was awarded the 2024 Brage Prize—the leading prize for fiction in Norway—as well as the 2025 Per Olov Enquist Literary Prize, which recognizes a young  European writer on the cusp of an international breakthrough. In their citation, the POE Prize jurors praise how Sameproblemet "challenges the boundaries of what literature can be ... Nedrejord writes sharply and analytically about the long-standing and ongoing oppression of Sami culture, identity, and language. At the same time, it is an unconditional declaration of love to generations of women who have defied experiences of oppression and marginalization, making it a stirring and shocking book in which historical reality clashes with artistic fiction. Nedrejord demonstrates a superb ability to write about the intersections between society and the individual." Kathrine Nedrejord is a writer and playwright. She has Sami with roots in Kjøllefjord in Finnmark, but has lived in Paris since 2011. She made her debut in 2010 with the novel Transitt and has since published the novels Trengsel (2014), Forvandlinga (2018) and Forbryter og punishment (2022), which was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize. Rights to Sameproblemet have sold to several countries around the world, including English.
