Food Without Borders

Food without Borders is a collaborative project involving Maurice Ravel Junior High School (a public school in the 20th district of Paris), Filmmakers Without Borders (an international non-profit), and The American University of Paris (AUP).

La Nourriture Sans Frontières est un projet de film né de la collaboration entre le collège Maurice Ravel (école publique du 20ème arrondissement de Paris), l’ONG Filmmakers Without Borders et l’Université Américaine de Paris (AUP).

During the fall and winter of 2017-2018, Christy Shields, Beth Grannis, and AUP students from the MAGC program and the undergraduate anthropology club, worked with a unique 6th grade class consisting of bi-lingual students (French and English) who take extra courses in English literature and history to prepare for the International Baccalaureate (OIB), and Francophone students who follow the traditional French Baccalaureate program. The latter are learning English as a foreign language and often speak another language at home, even if they do not study it at school.

D'octobre 2017 à février 2018, Christy Shields, Beth Grannis, des étudiants en MAGC à l'AUP et des étudiants de premier cycle en anthropologie ont travaillé avec une classe de 6ème, composée d’élèves bilingues (français et anglais) qui suivent des cours supplémentaires en littérature anglaise et en histoire afin de préparer l’Option Internationale au Baccalauréat (OIB), et d’élèves francophones qui suivent le cursus traditionnel du baccalauréat français. Ces derniers apprennent l’anglais comme langue étrangère et parlent parfois une autre langue à la maison sans pour autant l’étudier à l’école.

Through a series of workshops, conducted in French and English, the AUP team encouraged this 6th grade class to build bridges and explore their lived experiences of the civic ideal vivre ensemble (living together) through the prism of food and film. The AUP team introduced students to anthropological perspectives on difference and diversity, the interrelation between food, memory, the senses and identity, and ethnographic interviewing. They also introduced the 6th graders to basic filming and storytelling techniques through a variety of collaborative hands-on activities.

Une série d’ateliers ont été menés en français et en anglais. L’équipe de l’Université Américaine de Paris a encouragé les élèves de cette classe de 6ème à construire des ponts et explorer leur expérience personnelle de l’idéal citoyen du vivre ensemble à travers la nourriture et la réalisation du film. L’équipe de l’AUP a initié les élèves à des regards anthropologiques sur la différence et la diversité, sur les liens entre nourriture, mémoire, sens et identité, ainsi qu’à la conduite d'entretiens en ethnographie.
