Migrant Justice Presentation: Detention Center in Texas

University Room: David T. McGovern Grand Salon (C-104)
6, rue du Colonel Combes
Thursday, January 30, 2020 - 18:30 to 20:00

This is the Migrant Justice Club’s first event of the year. Seven AUP students in the History, Law, and Society program volunteered at a detention center in Texas this past summer. They worked directly with detained migrants, helping them to apply for asylum. The project was supervised by Professors Michelle Kuo and Albert Wu, and students worked with the guidance of attorneys and staff at RAICES, one of the leading immigrants' rights organizations in the United States.

The presentation will discuss asylum law, immigrant detention, and specific cases they worked on. They will also talk about how the work personally changed them. Their project was generously supported by the Schaeffer Center.

The students presenting are Sydney Scarpa, Alessandra Campbell, Paula Aguirre, Safira Newton-Matza, Eva Bonsignour, Lauren Nanes, and Indigo Golub.

Refreshments will be served.
