Coming in January 2024

Working Papers/Working Podcasts in Media, Communication & Global Change

It's 2024. In the past research centers commonly had "working papers" series—some, like the celebrated Birmingham Center for Contemporary Cultural studies, were more influential than some peer-reviewed journals and many books. Those  still matter, but  changing times in media, communication, and cultural studies call for "working podcasts" to publicize and share affiliates’ research projects and interests. The AUP Fashion Studies program already has podcasts going, and we will partner with them and publicize their excellent work.

The following series are slated to begin in the new year, and still others may be added.

  • Books That Changed How We Think, hosted by Professor Robert Payne.

Inspired by the legendary BBC Radio show Desert Island Discs, in this podcast series Robert Payne talks to other media, communications, film, and cultural studies scholars about the books (and films and other objects) that have been most important to their lives as researchers.

  • Cultural Resources for Global Change: Overlooked, Forgotten, Recovered

This podcast, hosted by Jayson Harsin features interviews and digital roundtables on overlooked, forgotten, or underpublicized arguments, theories, studies, artifacts, and events that can serve as intellectual tools for achieving a more just global future.

  • Emergence and Divergence: New Research and Long Views in Communication, Media, and Cultural Studies. In this recurring podcast series, rotating AUP professors interview influential senior and early-career scholars about their new research on subjects corresponding to MCGC research center interests.
  • AUP MCGC Spotlights In this series rotating AUP professors interview each other about current research and/or activism with a research grounding.

Grant applications, research groups

Most research centers and institutes do not get grants for the institute/center per se. Research groups within it apply for grants. For example, there are many EU horizon grants you may want to consider. Other ideas are always welcome!

Partnerships, cooperations

We also have some excellent partner research institutions, and their scholars are keen to create inter-institutional working groups, research workshops and conferences and potential publications. In addition to la Sorbonne Nouvelle, mentioned above, they include
