For Ancient Art, the Naples Archaeological Museum has one of the top collections in the world. There are mosaics and wall paintings from the bay of Naples, all recovered from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, and some very famous sculptures as well (the best surviving copy of Polykleitos’ Doryphoros, the Weary Herakles, etc.). There is also the infamous ‘cabinet of secrets,’containing surprising erotic imagery from Pompeii. Take the opportunity to see two unforgettable archaeological sites: Pompeii and Herculaneum. These are some of the rare places one can see actual Roman houses, streets, and urban planning in situ. It should be required of anyone studying Ancient Art to go and see this for themselves!
