AUP’s faculty governance is anchored by several standing committees, each operating under a permanent mandate defined in the Faculty Manual. While the Provost may occasionally convene ad hoc task forces for specific initiatives, the standing committees represent the primary bodies of faculty oversight. The sections below provide detailed information on the scope and responsibilities of these committees; for current membership rosters and guidelines please visit the committee-specific intranet pages detailed below.
The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate makes recommendations to the Senate concerning academic matters and assures shared governance with the Faculty Senate, the Provost and the President of the University. Suggestions made by the committee can only take effect when ratified by the Faculty Senate.
The Committee consults with the Senate and the President on university-wide projects that impact the academic life of the University. It also serves as an advisory body to the President on faculty-related concerns and projects. Faculty members who would like to raise an issue for discussion in the Faculty Senate may submit their recommendations to the Executive Committee.
One of the key roles of the committee is to keep the faculty manual up to date. In consultation with the Provost, the committee reviews the manual regularly, proposes changes as needed, and ensures the Senate votes on any updates. Changes to the faculty manual must also be approved by the President and Board of Trustees.
Please consult the faculty manual section 7.2 for more information on the committee mandate.
