I am interested in doing an internship, what should I take into consideration?

Finding an internship takes time and requires a strategy! We recommend that you start working on your CV and cover letters well in advance. Take time to do your research and think about the bigger picture. Start applying one or two semesters before your internship takes place – according to the type of organizations you are targeting. I still have a few questions…

Planning an internship can be complicated and sometimes confusing. If you have not found an answer to your question(s) on the main pages, please download our FAQs brochure [pdf] and don’t hesitate to contact us!

What to consider

The internship experience is part of the bigger academic picture and undertaking one or several internships can greatly influence your career planning.

However, when planning your internship, you will undoubtedly uncover a web of options and constraints. Make sure that you do not neglect the legal and practical elements of the organizational process.

We strongly encourage you to consider the following before starting to apply for internships in France or abroad.

AUP academic requirements

There are several types of academic requirements which a student should consider when planning his/her internship.

The legal context

French law stipulates that internships are reserved for currently enrolled degree-seeking students. Once a student has been coded a graduate he/she cannot carry out an internship. Graduation deferral is AUP’s way of enabling students to do a 6-month maximum internship (stage de fin d’études) before leaving AUP. Graduation can only be deferred once and only to the semester immediately following the last credit-bearing registration at AUP.

Mastering internship planning: asking yourself the rights questions

Many requirements and constraints apply to planning an internship experience. We know it is not easy to keep them all in mind so we’ve designed a checklist [pdf] to help you consider the academic, professional and practical aspects of internship planning.

  • Where should or can I do my internship? (Remember there is a US federal loan restriction)
  • When should I do my internship?
  • Do I want to earn credits for my internship?
  • What is my budget?
  • Should I consider a paid or unpaid internship?
  • What kind of organization should I target?
  • What kind of internship am I interested in?

Academic Requirements

There are 3 main types of academic requirements which a student should consider when planning an internship:

  • General academic internship requirements, prior to internship registration
  • AUP Internship registration policies
  • Internship completion requirements
  •

AUP internship registration policy

To be eligible for an internship, you must be currently enrolled as a degree-seeking student at AUP. Under certain conditions, visiting students may register an internship with AUP. Please contact the Internship Office for further information.

An internship registration is independent of the university’s (pre-)registration schedule. An internship can start and end at any time during the semester, however an internship must be registered before it begins. There is no retroactive registration! Please note that there is an internship registration fee.

Internships are assigned to the academic semester during which the main part of the internship takes place. However, if your internship runs into a second semester, past a set deadline (see below), it will be re-registered as part of the semester following the initial semester of registration and will show as a 0-CR internship extension on your transcripts. Re-registration is free of charge.

The re-registration rule applies when the internship:

  • is registered for the Spring semester but ends after June 15th (i.e. 0-CR internship extension in the Summer)
  • is registered for the Summer but ends after August 31st (i.e. 0-CR internship extension in the Fall)
  • is registered for the Fall semester but ends after January 15th (i.e. 0-CR internship extension in the Spring)

If you have registered a non-credit internship, it is impossible to change it to a credit-bearing option and vice-versa.

An incomplete grade will show on the student’s transcripts until all internship assignments have been submitted and graded following the end of the internship. It is important to note that an incomplete internship grade will not prolong student status beyond the last semester of study.

Internship completion requirements

Each student registering an internship with AUP is required to submit assignments following the end of his/her internship, according to French legislation. Please have a look at the requirements [pdf] applying to your case and download the appropriate assignment brochure.

Graduation Deferment

What is graduation deferment?

Graduation deferment is an option for degree-seeking students currently in their last semester of study – i.e. completing their last credit bearing courses or internships at AUP – who want to register an optional 0-CR internship before receiving their diploma.

  • Master's students should be aware they can only register a final 0-CR internship during their first thesis extension (as it equals deferring graduation). If they register a second 0-CR thesis extension, no new internship registration will be possible.
  • Bachelor's students should note that a 0-CR internship does not replace a 4-CR internship degree requirement, even if they have already earned the 128 credits (or more) for graduation.

Defer graduation from Fall 2016 to Spring 2017 by submitting an online request by December 9, 2016. Please note that specific conditions apply to graduation deferment.

Submit a request through the Graduation Deferment Webform.

Why defer graduation and register a final internship?

When looking for jobs – especially in France – candidates are often offered an internship that precedes employment. According to French law, when a student graduates, he/she ceases to be eligible for an internship. Therefore, it may be advantageous for students to postpone their graduation by one semester and register a final internship with AUP to improve their chances of finding employment just before or directly following graduation.

Registering an internship with AUP ensures student status for one additional semester and allows the student to obtain the required convention de stage to intern in France. Please note that it may also be necessary to defer graduation for an internship taking place abroad (i.e. visa application, request of the hosting organization, legislation of the country where the internship is taking place, etc.).

Please consider visa requirements, future career development, and budget concerns before making your decision. Additionally, please also be aware that students are not eligible for US federal loans during a semester in which only a 0-CR internship is registered (due to min. 6-CR barrier). Last but not least, deferring graduation in order to do a 0-credit internship once degree requirements have been completed, doesn't entitle students to defer their loan repayment. The bulk of all loan students have a grace period of six months that begins when a student drops down to less-then-half-time status. Repayment begins at the end of the grace period.

When should I defer graduation? Do I need to find an internship first?

An internship does not need to be already secured for a student to submit a graduation deferment request. In the event that the student does not find an internship, graduation deferment is reversible.

Student are required to defer graduation from one semester to another one by a set deadline (see table below). The deadline to defer graduation from Fall 2016 to Spring 2017 is December 9, 2016.

 Which conditions apply?

  • Students must defer graduation before a set deadline for their request to be approved (see table below).
  • Students may only defer graduation once.
  • Students having deferred graduation will be considered graduates of the semester in which the internship is (last) registered. Re-registration rules may apply (see table below).
  • French law stipulates that a ‘voluntary’ or ‘non-obligatory’ internship in France must be in line with the student’s course of studies (i.e. in the field of the major and/or minor, or of the MA Program).
  • All internship requests are subject to approval by the AUP Internship Office.
  • To register a 0-CR internship, a fee of 200€ applies for academic year 2015/2016.
  • For a student to submit a graduation deferment request, the internship does not need to be already secured. However, students who need to renew their titre de séjour will have to provide a convention de stage for their extension application. They are strongly advised to plan ahead to find and register an internship with AUP before the extension of the application deadline.
  • Students must register their internship by mid-semester (during the semester they have applied to defer) or their graduation date will revert to the original date and they will be fined a 50€ penalty for administrative costs.
  • Once they have graduated, students can no longer defer graduation and/or obtain a convention de stage from AUP.
  • Students are not eligible for federal loans during a semester in which only a 0-CR internship is registered (due to min. 6-CR barrier).
