What Our Students Say

French Immersion:

‘From my first steps into the Jouffroy residence, to navigating the myriad of métro stations, and summertime strolls exploring the Parisian ambiances, my experience as a French student at AUP has been truly life-changing. I’ve formed meaningful friendships and found inspiring mentors, and the support of my peers has helped elevate my French fluency to new heights. One thing I know I’ll never forget about AUP is the sense of warmth and security that I’ve felt on campus and in its community. But I definitely won’t forget les petits-déjeuners each morning during class breaks—toute la bouffe est toujours trop bonne! The classroom vibe is always fun, creative, and super supportive—there’s never a moment where we’re not laughing, learning, or simply having a good time together.’

- Jon, 2025 AUP Summer School Student

Art through Paris Museums:

‘The class was great and I enjoyed everything about it. The Professor packed the most interesting information into the class period, and it was never boring. In fact, I looked forward to the homework each night!  I have a deeper understanding of the history of European art and the manner that it is displayed in Paris museums. I have a much better understanding of the museums themselves too.’

FAQs

Should I audit a class or take it for academic credit?

The decision to audit a class or take a class for academic credit is entirely up to you, but there are some things that can help you make your decision:

Do you simply want to experience taking a class at AUP? Do you just want to learn about a new topic or learn a new skill for your own personal interest? If this is the case, auditing the class might suit you best. When you audit a class, you do not receive a grade or academic credit for the class, but in some ways, auditing a class can give you the opportunity to fully focus on your learning: you can dive into a new interest area or explore and engage with new subjects without the pressure of performance or focus on grades. Auditing a class allows you to participate in the classroom swirl, learn from seasoned professors and instructors, and put your personal learning and curiosity first, so if you want to take a class for the experience and the joy of learning, then auditing might be the best option for you at AUP Summer School.

Do you want to take classes for academic credit in the hope of transferring those credits to another institution for a current or future degree? Are you hoping to have a grade in a class to build your formal academic record or to add to your professional credentials? Or do you thrive and learn best through evaluated learning? If any of the above is important to you, you should think about taking classes for academic credit. Taking summer classes for academic credit can help you advance your academic career: credit can count towards majors, minors, certificates, and even graduation. When you successfully complete a class for credit, you receive formal proof of learning, via a grade and transcript, which not only demonstrates acquisition of knowledge, but can also be useful for your CV, for future academic endeavors, and for your future career. Some students learn best through evaluated learning, as grades can help students see where they are doing well and where they can improve, so credit-bearing classes might be helpful to this end too, as you will learn from, and be graded by, established academics who are experts in their respective fields. Taking a class for credit can have myriad benefits for your personal, academic, and future career endeavors, so if you want to use your time at AUP Summer School to further these endeavors, taking classes for academic credit might be the way to go!

I want to take classes for academic credit, but is it guaranteed that they will transfer over to my home institution?

Credits earned at AUP Summer School are eligible to be transferred to other institutions, but ultimately it is your home institution that will decide if they accept your transfer credits from AUP. As such, you should discuss this directly with your home institution to verify if the credits can successfully be transferred over. We can also provide you with a syllabus and additional class information should you need it.

I am taking French Immersion but I’m worried that the class will be too easy/too hard. Can I switch to another level if this is the case?

All students taking French Immersion must take a placement test before beginning the class, so you will be placed in a class that is deemed appropriate to your level of French. However, if you or your professor feels that you might thrive and excel in a different class with a different level, they will help you switch into a different class. This process is facilitated at Orientation and on the first day of class.
