The Writing Lab provides support to both our undergraduate and our graduate student body. To make an appointment with an undergrad or grad Writing Lab tutor, use the following link:

Come with whatever you’ve got—an assignment, ideas, notes, or a draft, but please bring three printed copies of any written work!

Anatomy of a Writing Lab consultation

1. Talking and setting your agenda

The session will kick off with the tutor asking questions to understand your goals, the assignment prompt, where you are in the writing process, and two or three main concerns you want to focus on: strength of your thesis, sources and evidence, coherence of argument, how to find sources, etc.  At this point you might want to highlight specific areas of concern.

Then you will take a few minutes to talk us through your paper.

2. Reading sections of your text – 3 hard copies please.

This is the heartbeat of the session: reading aloud portions of your paper.  And paper is preferable to screens.  Thanks for printing out 3 copies for us.

3. Working together on the text and planning next steps / next visits to the Writing Lab

Your tutor will provide feedback and suggest strategies to address prioritized issues, such as developing an argument, improving organization via a reverse outline, or identifying patterns of grammatical errors.

Together you will make a list of your next steps for revision and takeaways for future writing projects. Make your next appointments with us as well!

No appointment? No problem!  Walk-ins are more than welcome!  Find us on the 4th floor of the Quai!
