Gilets Jaunes Demonstrations Update to Students

This post is a republished version of an email communication sent by AUP Vice President for Security, Operations and Student Services Marc Montheard to current students on March 23, 2019, about the Gilets Jaunes demonstrations. It is part of our Safety & Security blog that rounds up all the latest news and updates for our community.

Dear Students,

In preparation for today’s Yellow Vest movement, the government has promised that police forces will act quickly and aggressively in case of destruction or attacks from demonstrators. The result may be more violent clashes than usual, and this is why we encourage you more than ever to avoid areas impacted by demonstrations today and to remain vigilant.

Areas to avoid: the movement has announced a demonstration starting Place Denfert-Rochereau and finishing at Sacré Coeur (via Bd St Michel, Bd du Palais, Bd Sébastopol, Bd Magenta, Bd Rochechouart and rue de Clignancourt). Another group has also called for a sit-in on the Place du Trocadéro.

Following destruction last week on the Champs-Elysées, the government has prohibited demonstrations on the Champs-Elysées but also at the Place de l’Etoile and the Place de la Concorde.

Please be cautious, stay safe and have a good day!
