Health & Wellness

The Health and Wellness Division of the Student Development Office is an important resource as you navigate the challenges linked to adapting to life in Paris and your higher education at AUP.

The Health and Wellness team is made up of multiple staff including the health plan coordinator, an administrative assistant, an on-campus student guidance counselor, and two off-campus therapists. All the members of the team strive to maintain and improve your overall experience at AUP.

Health care plan

The AUP student health care plan is mandatory, unless students can provide proof of an alternative coverage plan at the beginning of each semester that meets AUP’s requirements for exemption. There are various AUP student health care plan options depending on student status and age. The most important thing to remember is that all AUP students will be insured while registered at AUP. The AUP student health care plan covers the following and more:

  • eye glasses and contact lenses
  • preventive dental treatment
  • alternative medicine such as chiropractic care
  • doctors who make house calls (SOS Médecins)
  • up to fifteen sessions a semester with a psychologist

Medical providers

The American University of Paris has a close network of English speaking medical providers in Paris who know the AUP community well and who can provide students with the medical care they require. The health plan coordinator is available to help guide students and to answer any questions. Students are invited to visit the Student Development Office for a full list of practitioners, a health care handbook, and for any questions or concerns.

Sometimes students need a friendly ear to discuss something that is bothering them, or to help them make an important decision. The counseling services at the Student Development Office are designed to offer a wide variety of support and guidance to students in and outside the classroom, ranging from getting organized to dealing with ongoing psychological issues. In a safe and confidential environment, the student guidance counselor provides one-on-one support either through drop-in or scheduled meetings on-campus, or scheduled appointments with one of our off-campus therapists, free of charge.

We also collaborate with a large English-speaking network of medical and mental health care providers in Paris including counselors, doctors, psychologists, and psychiatrists most of whom are fully reimbursed by AUP's comprehensive health care plan. The counseling support that AUP provides empowers students to overcome hurdles, manage stress, adapt to a foreign city or country, and achieve academic success.

Learning disabilities

AUP provides a broad range of support for students with disabilities. The student guidance counselor coordinates all requests for learning disability accommodations. Your counselor can provide you with information on support services, point you toward a testing center, and assist you in requesting accommodations from your professors. We’re dedicated to helping all students find academic success.

Records of completed immunization must be filed with AUP’s Health Office in order to safeguard your health and the health of the entire community. As prevention is key to avoiding risk, you are expected to provide proof of the following immunizations as a student at AUP:

  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
  • Tetanus – Diphtheria or DPT
  • Meninococcal Vaccine (A, C, Y, W-135)

Please refer to the Student Immunization Record [pdf] form or the AUP Health Office for further details. AUP’s immunization compliance deadline is July 30 for the fall semester and December 31 for the spring semester. Failure to comply will result in administrative suspension. Students who wish to apply for an exemption, please fill out the Immunization Waiver Request [doc]

If you have questions, please take a look at our FAQ guide [pdf] first before contacting your Admissions Counselor or AUP's Health Office.

Workshops and resources

The offices of health & wellness and Student Development offer a variety of workshops and other resources held during orientation and throughout the semester. These are designed to help educate students about health and wellness issues, such as safety in Paris, body image, HIV/AIDS awareness, managing stress, as well as time management and organizational strategies.

Please don't hesitate to be in touch with the health & wellness team if you need any kind of support. Our mission is your well-being!
