MA in International Affairs

I was born in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia and lived there until I went to college, attending the University of Georgia in Athens. The 2016 US election was a rude awakening for me. I became aware of how little I understood about US politics and international relations, and was increasingly dissatisfied with the state of the world – in a way Donald Trump inspired me to apply to grad school!  I felt compelled to do something about it, concluding that education was the best way to understand the history of humanity, where we are today and how we can propel ourselves in the right direction. After looking at the course offerings, the professors and the alumni network, I decided that AUP was the best place for me.

I chose the MA in International Affairs because I felt I was lacking an international perspective. I wanted to understand how nation states interact with one another, why relations between certain states are the way they are today and how to use international relations to create a better world. AUP gave me these opportunities. My favorite moment in the classroom so far has been having the realization that I could be part of the amazing projects and efforts of my professors. Professor Perry talked to our class about how her career had taken her all over the world allowing her to make a positive impact on so many people. I suddenly realized, that could be me. I had never envisioned that kind of life for myself until that moment. It became so real, and was intimidating and exciting at the same time.

AUP’s students are truly inspiring and have made my time here better than I could have imagined. In the past, I only saw a limited number of career opportunities that would allow me to effect change. Since I’ve become a part of our international student body, I have interacted with people from all walks of life who are doing their part to improve the world. It is unique to be able to look at such varied career ideals and see a common goal: the betterment of humanity.

My professors bring their real-world experience into the classroom in a way that I have never experienced before and their practical and theoretical knowledge have really impacted the goals I set for myself.

I have changed for the better as a result of my time attending the University, it has shattered the idea that I had to choose a career path based off of its level of practicality. I see an opportunity to make the world a better place in each of my classes. My professors bring their real-world experience into the classroom in a way that I have never experienced before and their practical and theoretical knowledge have really impacted the goals I set for myself. Students listen and participate; we know that information is valuable and we learn for our futures, not just for the next exam. The dynamic academic structure has made it easier for me to engage with challenging material in a way that I understand and will be able to apply from the very start of my professional career.

I am here because I believe in fighting for a world where people can peacefully coexist while maintaining their individuality. Paris is a wonderful example of that. There are so many people with different beliefs, languages and accents, and we are all together in one city surrounded by beautiful buildings and historic monuments. The combination of history and diversity that defines Paris has been the perfect backdrop to learn how to improve the world for all humanity. I cannot imagine studying anywhere else.
