Lance

I was born in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia and lived there until I went to college, attending the University of Georgia in Athens. The 2016 US election was a rude awakening for me. I became aware of how little I understood about US politics and international relations, and was increasingly dissatisfied with the state of the world – in a way Donald Trump inspired me to apply to grad school!  I felt compelled to do something about it, concluding that education was the best way to understand the history of humanity, where we are today and how we can propel ourselves in the right direction. After looking at the course offerings, the professors and the alumni network, I decided that AUP was the best place for me. 

I chose the MA in International Affairs because I felt I was lacking an international perspective. I wanted to understand how nation states interact with one another, why relations between certain states are the way they are today and how to use international relations to create a better world. AUP gave me these opportunities. My favorite moment in the classroom so far has been having the realization that I could be part of the amazing projects and efforts of my professors. Professor Perry talked to our class about how her career had taken her all over the world allowing her to make a positive impact on so many people. I suddenly realized, that could be me. I had never envisioned that kind of life for myself until that moment. It became so real, and was intimidating and exciting at the same time. 

AUP’s students are truly inspiring and have made my time here better than I could have imagined. In the past, I only saw a limited number of career opportunities that would allow me to effect change. Since I’ve become a part of our international student body, I have interacted with people from all walks of life who are doing their part to improve the world. It is unique to be able to look at such varied career ideals and see a common goal: the betterment of humanity.
